Rifle Garfield County Airport
228 Acres of Colorado airfield assets constructed in 9 months
Construction manager responsible for leading field engineer staff and guiding the contractor during
the construction of the 7,000-foot-long by 100-foot-wide runway 8-26, full-length parallel Taxiway A, six connecting taxiways, aircraft run-up areas, and aircraft parking ramps covering 228 acres of airport property worth a construction value of $19 million.
The aggressively scheduled 9-month project reoriented the runway 4 degrees to achieve better approach minimums, correct the longitudinal runway slope, improve safety areas, and open space for future building on airport property.
Moved 1,200,000 cubic yards of earth, paved 70,000 tons of asphalt, installed nearly 7 miles of underdrain, and 3,000 feet of storm drain, and relocated the ILS, two PAPIs, runway and taxiway edge lighting, and installed a new electrical vault.
The project was substantially completed ahead of schedule, met strict FAA audits for quality control and acceptance, and was completed under budget.
